Layers, a director's notes, the Export page, the show file, Clear and backing up.
Layers and sending one
- Every mark a department makes sits in its layer. Master holds acts, scenes, songs and cuts. Audio holds desk and SFX cues and the mic plot. LX holds LX and spot cues. DSM holds standbys and the DSM's own cues.
- More, Layers shows or hides each one. A tick means it is showing.
- A hidden layer is off the page, out of the lists and left out of exports. Nothing is deleted.
- The menu holds the layers of the departments switched on.
- To hand a layer on, open Export. Under For another iPad, tap the layer.
- The other person needs the same script imported first. QPlot matches it by page count and the first words of five pages.
- Opening the file there finds the matching show and asks before replacing. The question gives the mark count in their layer and in the file.
- Replace swaps that one layer. The other layers stay as they were.
- With the show open, one Undo brings the old layer back. With it closed, there is no undo.
- With no matching script, QPlot says so. Import the script first.
- A scanned script has no text to match, so two scans of the same length pass as one. Read the show's name in the question before tapping Replace.
- Pen marks, notes, hidden pages and This is page 1 stay on your iPad. A layer never carries them.
Receiving notes from a director
- A director's notes arrive as a file. Open it, or tap Import notes at the top of the Notes list.
- QPlot finds the show with the same script and adds them. The list turns to Notes by itself.
- Each note sits at its place on the page, marked with who sent it.
- Writing from Show mode arrives as the director wrote it.
- Tick one once it is done. It leaves the page and stays in the list under Done.
- Or tap the note on the page and tap the tick. Nothing goes back to the director.
- If the director sends a note again, it opens again here with the new words. Your own notes are never replaced.
- The For menu at the top of the list filters by department, or shows only yours.
The Export page in full
- Export, in the More menu, has three groups: Print, Lists and For another iPad. A row with nothing to export is left out.
- Plotted script is a PDF of the pages with the marks on, for printing. Choose which layers print, and type a first and last page to print part of it.
- Show on it picks the layers to print. A layer hidden on screen starts switched off.
- Pages takes a first and a last page, in the script's own numbers. Leave both empty for the whole script.
- Tap Export. It counts through the pages, and Cancel stops it.
- The PDF leaves out hidden pages. Tags print as full names, even with dots on screen. Notes written in Show mode print where they were written.
- Cue list is a spreadsheet of every cue showing, in script order: department, cue, page, note, mics on, mics off. A follow-on reads SND2 to 4. Spot cues and standbys are left out.
- Followspot sheet has one row per pickup. It is offered once the show has a spot cue.
- Mic plot lists each character, their mics, their line count and their first page.
- Who speaks where has characters down, scenes across and a line count in each. It uses the mic plot and the scene tags, or the acts if there are no scenes.
- The lists follow the screen. Hide a layer and its cues stay out of the cue list.
- Whole show and the layer rows make files for another iPad. A layer is listed once it holds something.
The show file
- Whole show packs the script and every mark into one file.
- Send it from the share sheet: AirDrop, Messages, Mail or Save to Files.
- On the other iPad, open the file, or tap Import in the library and pick it. It arrives as a new show.
- A name already in the library gets a number added.
- From the library, press and hold a show and tap Export for the same show file.
Clear
- Clear, in the More menu, wipes marks in bulk.
- Choose This page or Whole script.
- Each row is a kind of mark, with how many there are. Switch on the ones to remove.
- Tags are acts, scenes and songs. Cues are every department's cues, standbys included, and hidden layers too. Notes are every note, a director's included. Ink is pen and highlighter.
- Sent and finished notes can also be deleted from the Notes list. Each of those headings has its own Delete.
- Whole script adds a Mic plot row. It deletes the characters and the scan behind them, so the numbers leave the page.
- Tap Delete. QPlot lists what will go and asks.
- One Undo brings all of it back.
Backing up and duplicating
- Shows are kept on the iPad. There is no account and nothing syncs, so keep a copy somewhere else.
- Export all, in the library, packs every show as its own file and opens one share sheet.
- Save them to Files, or AirDrop them to a Mac.
- To restore, tap Import and pick the files. Several can go in at once.
- Press and hold a show and tap Duplicate before a big change. The copy has copy on the end of its name.
Working without a Pencil
- Finger input is in Settings.
- Browse joins the front of the tool bar and is picked. With Browse on, swipes turn pages and nothing is marked.
- Pick any other tool and a finger does the Pencil's job: draw, place a cue, circle a heading.
- A strip down each side still turns the page on a tap, and cannot be marked.
- Go back to Browse to swipe.
- Two things need a Pencil. Handwriting in a note box is one. Show notes are the other: the Note button leaves the Show mode strip.
Odds and ends
- A repeated cue number is allowed. The cue box flags it in red.
- A tag that was never named has a yellow warning in the side panel. Tap the tag on the page and name it.
- Cannot open, under a show in the library, means its marks are damaged. Press and hold it and tap Export script to get the PDF out.
- A PDF with a password will not import. Remove the password first.
- If a Word file will not read, export it from Word as a PDF and import that.
- Highlights and notes added to a PDF in other apps come in with it.
